What is a Tattoo?
A "Tattoo" is a spectacular production of entertainment, highlighted by ceremonial performances of military music, massed bands, competitions and displays by military, police and civilian performers.
"Tattoos" evolved from the 17th century practice by the British Military in Holland of summonsing soldiers back to quarters with the beat of a drum. Later, the drummer might have been joined by a bugler and a piper. The practice evolved into larger and more colourful groups of musicians and marchers performing for local people. The word "tattoo" came from the Dutch phrase "doe den tap toe", a signal to innkeepers to "turn off the taps". Over the years the phrase was shortened to "tap toe" and finally the word we use today, "Tattoo".
Today, there are eight major Tattoos in the world, plus many smaller Tattoos and festivals, each with its own unique flavor. As the "Home of the RCMP", Saskatchewan's Tattoo has a special connection to the RCMP. However, the military origins are carefully preserved. In fact, the Saskatchewan Tattoo recognizes all those in serving including the military, police, and emergency services.
